Ghana and China sign US$30m grant to build university in Damongo

Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, on behalf of the government, has signed a US$30 million grant agreement with China to support the construction of a university in Damongo in the Savanna Region

The grant comes after the Finance Minister received the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, in a meeting that underscored the strong and ongoing partnership between Ghana and China.

During the visit, the two sides marked a significant milestone in bilateral cooperation with the signing of a US$30 million grant agreement to support the construction of a university in Damongo.

Speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana, Dr Forson expressed gratitude to Ambassador Tong for his dedicated service and his role in strengthening Ghana–China relations.

He also highlighted the importance of addressing exchange losses in bilateral trade, noting that it is logical for trade between Ghana and China to increasingly be settled in their respective currencies.

Concluding the meeting, Dr Forson wished Ambassador Tong Defa well in his future endeavours and expressed optimism for the continued growth and strengthening of relations between Ghana and China.

7 natural resources and livelihoods 'galamsey' has affected in Ghana

Illegal small-scale mining, known as galamsey , has significantly impacted various sectors of Ghana's economy and environment. Over the years, the effects of this uncontrolled mining activity have become more pronounced, threatening natural resources and livelihoods. Here are seven key activities that galamsey has disrupted in Ghana: 1. Agriculture Galamsey has been a major threat to agriculture, which is the backbone of Ghana's economy.  Galamsey activities often take place on fertile farmlands, displacing farmers and destroying crops. The chemicals used in the mining process, such as mercury and cyanide, seep into the soil and water bodies, making the land unsuitable for cultivation. This has led to reduced agricultural productivity, loss of livelihoods for farmers, and food insecurity in affected areas. 2. Water resources One of the most devastating effects of galamsey is the pollution of water bodies. Rivers such as the Pra, Ankobra, and Birim have been heavily contaminated...

Gold Fields Damang Mine – Opportunity for MIIF blueprint to increase Ghana’s stake in mining assets?

The Government of Ghana has officially taken over the Damang Gold Mine from Gold Fields, effective 18 April 2025 — a historic move that signals a bold shift in the country’s natural resource governance strategy. While the initial decision to decline the lease extension drew mixed reactions, the transition of the asset into Ghanaian hands marks a watershed moment. This is not merely about ownership — it is about agency, ambition, and the long-awaited opportunity to redefine Ghana’s relationship with its mineral wealth. Why MIIF Matters This evolving trajectory of Ghana’s resource strategy is best understood through the establishment of Ghana’s minerals sovereign wealth fund — the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF). Created in 2018 by Act 978, MIIF’s core objective is to maximize the value of royalties and dividends from the country’s mineral wealth by increasing the Government of Ghana’s equity interests and deriving optimal value across the entire mining value chain. It must be emp...

Sammy Gyamfi exposes ridiculous 2 million jobs claim by 'liar' Bawumia

Sammy Gyamfi , the Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has exposed the ridiculous contradictions in the figures put out by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah relative to jobs they claim to have been created by the government. Earlier, Dr. Bawumia claimed during his address at the national Eid-ul-Fitr Fitr celebration at the Independence Square, when he touched on job creation and opportunities for the youth said the government has created 2 million jobs created since 2017. The public doubted his claims when he said at a health walk at Mpraeso that "verifiable data" proves that the government created over two million jobs in both public and private sectors. He also provided data to prove his claim. In a post on Facebook, Dr. Bawumia said the list he provided was to prove to 'naysayers' who doubted the figures that the numbers are not fabricated urging them to do ...
