Ayawaso East NDC primary heats up as late MP's widow and Baba Jamal declare intent

The race for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary slot in Ayawaso East is beginning to take shape, following the declaration of interest by two notable figures ahead of the party’s upcoming primary.

Hajia Amina Adam, the widow of the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, has officially announced her intention to contest the seat, a move that has attracted significant attention within the constituency.

Her decision is widely seen as an effort to continue the political legacy of her late husband, who was a prominent figure in the area until his passing.

Experienced politician, who is currently Ghana's High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal, has also declared his intention to contest in the primary.

Baba Jamal, who has previously served in various leadership roles within the NDC and government, is expected to bring experience and strong party credentials to the race.

The entry of the two aspirants is already generating debate among party supporters, with discussions focusing on continuity, experience, and the future direction of the party in the Ayawaso East constituency. Party grassroots members have begun mobilising support as anticipation builds toward the primary.

The NDC will hold its parliamentary primary on February 7, 2026, to elect the party’s candidate for the Ayawaso East Constituency parliamentary by-election slated for March 3, 2026.

In a press statement signed and issued on January 22, 2026, Hajia Amina Adam said she decided to present herself for the party’s primary after consultations with community leaders, party members and residents of the constituency.

She explained that her decision came after several weeks of deep reflection following the death of her husband on January 4, 2026, a period she described as one of profound personal loss for herself and her children.

She noted that during this time, she received numerous calls from across the constituency, including elders, grassroots supporters and youth groups, who encouraged her to step forward and continue the work of her late husband, who served Ayawaso East until his passing.

Hajia Amina Adam said she heeded the call after consultations with chiefs, imams and other community leaders, as well as young people who urged her to contest the seat on the ticket of the NDC.

She added that her ambition is to sustain the public service legacy of her late husband, with particular focus on issues affecting children, vulnerable persons and young people in search of employment.

The contest is expected to be keen, as the constituency remains a strategic seat for the party in the Greater Accra Region.
