Sam George, the outspoken Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, raised concerns about the unchecked proliferation of galamsey activities across the country.
Sam George, in his passionate criticism, highlighted the environmental degradation, lamenting how Ghana's once lush landscape is being reduced to barren lands and poisoned rivers.
In an X post, he said the damage to ourselves and our children by evil and wicked politicians, chiefs, clergy and ordinary Ghanaians engaged in illegal mining must be denounced by all.
Beyond the environmental damage, the socio-economic impact of galamsey cannot be overstated.
Galamsey often operates outside any regulatory framework, meaning the state loses valuable revenue that could have been reinvested into national development.
Moreover, the practice displaces local communities, leading to loss of livelihoods, and sometimes, social unrest.
According to Sam George, these illicit activities are not only economically unsustainable but also morally reprehensible.
He expressed concern that local and foreign criminal elements involved in galamsey are enriching themselves at the expense of ordinary Ghanaians, especially in rural areas, who suffer the brunt of the destruction.
One of the most pressing concerns raised by Sam George is the government's lack of meaningful action in combating the galamsey menace.
Despite the government's periodic clampdowns and promises to regulate mining, galamsey continues unabated, largely due to corruption within local and national government bodies.
Reports have frequently emerged of government officials, both elected and appointed, being complicit in these illegal operations.
These individuals, driven by greed, allegedly receive bribes or turn a blind eye to the destruction in exchange for personal gain.
Sam George was unrelenting in his call for accountability, asking how long Ghanaians will allow a small group of "wicked" individuals to destroy the nation's future for their selfish interests.
The damage to ourselves and our children by evil and wicked politicians, chiefs, clergy and ordinary Ghanaians engaged in illegal mining must be denounced by all. How much money would assuage your conscience?
